HOW TO REDUCE PRESSURE ON YOUR L&D TEAMS

How to reduce pressure on your L&D teams

Staff learning and development are vital for forward-thinking companies seeking to boost performance and improve recruitment and retention rates. But more than half (53%) of L&D professionals say their workloads have risen in the past year – despite increased budgets and headcounts.

Let’s take a look at the CIPD Learning at Work 2023 report to find out more – and discover how improved automation could ease the burden.

Learning at Work today

As technological advances continue at top speed, organisations need to upskill their workers to keep up. The CIPD report says that this is the top priority for L&D professionals, cited by 29%.

However, the number who say they can respond with agility to the changing needs of their organisation has dropped from 69% in 2021 to just 59% today.

And while 51% said their employers encouraged participation in L&D, only 39% thought employees were given time away from their day-to-day duties to do so.

So for many L&D teams, it really is an uphill struggle!

The power of digital

Of course, the pandemic transformed the L&D field, triggering a wholescale shift online and the adoption of groundbreaking technologies. Encouragingly, this seems to be continuing.

In 2023, 48% of L&D professionals said that digital learning had increased in the last year, and 55% of L&D leaders described their teams as innovative in their use of learning technologies. Most professionals are now harnessing technology for administration, content design and delivery.

However, there’s certainly room for digital improvement. Less than a quarter of L&D teams say they are skilled at designing and delivering digital learning, and just 5% are using AI tools such as ChatGPT, with a further 6% planning to do so over the next year.

Working smarter

According to the CIPD, the survey points to several areas in which L&D professionals could ease their task by working smarter.

Harnessing data is key. Currently, only 57% are proactive in identifying performance issues and recommending solutions. Less than 10% strongly agree they use evidence-informed decisions to improve performance. And almost half lack a systematic approach to evaluation and measurement.

That means that many L&D teams find it hard to judge which learning methods are proving effective and supporting business goals.
